Prior acclimatisation is essential; these three days do not include an acclimatisation course. You should already be comfortable with crampons, an ice axe and roped alpine travel. Tell us about your recent climbs so we can discuss suitable preparation.

The Route

Day By Day

The outline below follows the Goûter route, with two nights in mountain huts. We discuss your preparation before booking and confirm the plan with your guide before departure. Hut availability and mountain conditions can change the programme.

Times and elevations are approximate. + means ascent and − means descent. Values marked net compare the start and end of the walking stage; they exclude the extra ups and downs along the trail. Travel by flight, road or lift is excluded from walking elevation figures. Flexible days are set by the leader.

DAY 1

From The Valley To Tête Rousse

Overview

Leave the valley behind and make the mountain approach to Refuge de Tête Rousse, at around 3,165m. This is the first overnight stop on the normal route, below the steeper ground leading towards the Goûter hut.

Today’s Objective

Reach Tête Rousse after the agreed lift and railway approach.

Route & Preparation

Arrive with your equipment checked and your pack ready for the climb. At the refuge, settle into shared hut accommodation and use the afternoon to eat, rest and organise your kit. Your guide will go through the next stage, including the timing and the conditions expected higher up.

Reservations on this route are managed for named climbers. The overnight plan needs to be agreed in advance rather than left until you reach the hut.

DAY 2

Climb Towards The Summit

Overview

A night-time departure begins the main ascent. The route crosses the Grand Couloir and climbs the rocky Aiguille du Goûter before reaching the Goûter refuge. This section demands attention to footwork and the guide’s instructions; rockfall conditions can prevent passage.

Today’s Objective

Attempt Mont Blanc and descend to the booked refuge.

Route & Preparation

Above the hut, the character changes to high snow slopes and ridges. The normal route continues towards the Dôme du Goûter, passes the Vallot emergency shelter and follows the exposed Bosses ridge to Mont Blanc’s summit. Cold, altitude and the length of the day make steady movement and sound preparation essential.

After the summit attempt, descend to the booked refuge. Reaching the top is only part of the day: keep enough energy and concentration for the return, with the guide deciding when to turn around.

DAY 3

Descend To Nid d’Aigle & Return To The Valley

Overview

Leave the booked refuge early and descend the Goûter normal route towards Nid d’Aigle. Continue down by the Tramway du Mont-Blanc and the agreed valley transport when services are operating. The exact walking finish can change with the lift and railway timetable.

Today’s Objective

Descend to Nid d’Aigle and return to Chamonix.

Route & Preparation

If the summit window shifts, your guide may reorganise the programme around this final day. A later attempt depends on the weather, your condition and the overnight arrangements; it is not a guaranteed second opportunity.

This programme returns by the Goûter side of Mont Blanc. The Aiguille du Midi belongs to a different route option. Return to Chamonix after the descent and allow a realistic margin for onward travel.

Approx. Time
3–5 hours for the descent
Elevation Change

Quality costs more. Preparation, appropriate guiding and a workable hut plan matter on Mont Blanc. Conditions can require a different objective or a retreat. We will discuss the programme and booking arrangements with you before you commit.
