Introduction To Navigation
Learn to understand where you are, where you want to go and what you should expect to see along the way. This is practical map-and-compass work, taught at a pace that leaves room for questions and repetition.
Course Aims
Build a simple, repeatable navigation routine so you can start making your own decisions on straightforward walks.
Who It’s For
Walkers who are new to navigation or have mostly relied on another person, a marked path or a phone. No previous map-and-compass experience is needed.
What You’ll Practise
- Map symbols, scale and contour shapes.
- Orienting the map and matching features to the ground.
- Taking a bearing and checking direction.
- Using distance, pacing and timing as supporting information.
- Following short legs and recognising when you have gone far enough.
- Preparing a manageable walk and keeping track of your progress.
How You’ll Learn
Start with clear features, then take responsibility for short sections of a route. Before moving, describe what you expect to encounter; afterwards, compare that expectation with the ground you found. Exercises build gradually rather than testing you before you have had a chance to practise.
By The End
A working understanding of the map and compass, experience of making route decisions yourself and a set of exercises to consolidate on suitable local walks.
Your Next Step
Practise regularly on familiar ground. A refresher can help resolve specific sticking points, while the advanced course is for those already navigating competently.
