Winter Mountain Skills — Introduction
Discover how a familiar mountain day changes when snow, ice and shorter daylight enter the picture. We bring movement, preparation and route choice together, with time to practise each skill before using it on a suitable journey.
Course Aims
Develop sound habits for planning a winter walk, using your equipment and recognising when the ground or conditions call for a different plan.
Who It’s For
Summer hillwalkers taking their first steps into winter. You should be comfortable with a full walking day and carrying a rucksack; previous crampon or ice-axe experience is not required.
What You’ll Practise
- Boot, crampon and axe selection, fitting and practical checks.
- Balance, footwork and efficient movement on appropriate snow and ice.
- Using an axe for support, with arrest practice where a suitable training slope allows.
- The effect of weather, avalanche information and cornices on route choice.
- Navigation when paths and familiar landmarks are covered.
- Keeping warm, managing stops and responding to an unexpected delay.
How You’ll Learn
Begin with the forecast and equipment, then practise on carefully selected ground with instructor feedback. Use short exercises to build confidence before connecting the skills on a winter walk. Snowshoeing or introductory emergency rope awareness can be included where useful and agreed.
By The End
A clearer understanding of winter equipment and movement, plus a practical approach to choosing a suitable day. You will leave with feedback on what to consolidate before taking more responsibility for your own winter trips.
Your Next Step
Build experience on suitable winter walks before moving to the intermediate level. Strong summer navigation remains valuable, so a navigation refresher may be a useful part of your preparation.
